Telfair State Prison inmate dies after fight

Humberto Hernandez (Georgia Dept. of Corrections)

An inmate at Telfair State Prison died during a fight.

The state Department of Correction says Humberto Hernandez died after a fight with other inmates at the prison dorms.

The fight happened around 11 a.m. Wednesday and Hernandez died while being taken to an airfireld where he could be transported to a hospital.

Department spokeswoman Jeal Salter could not describe his injuries or whether a weapon was used. She said the autopsy on Hernandez was not completed.

The Department of Corrections says Herndandez, age 41, was convicted of murder in Cobb County with possible parole.

Salter says his death is still under investigation

She would not describe the fight, but a Department of Corrections report on the death lists five prison staff members and two other inmates as being "directly involved." The report says discipline has been filed against one of those inmates, but Salter would not comment on that.

The U.S. Department of Justice says, from 2001-2014,, about four inmates a year died from homicide in Georgia state prison. That's the fourth-highest number in the nation.
