'We've learned from the past storms on what to do' | Telfair County getting ready for Tropical Storm Debby

Workers and residents are preparing for rain and wind ahead of the tropical storm

TELFAIR COUNTY, Ga. — Over in Telfair County, people are bracing for whatever Tropical Storm Debby may bring.

Telfair County EMA Director Lee Conner says the Oconee and the Ocmulgee River run through the county. He says the rivers are not a threat, but flash flooding is.

"We're going to watch for how much rainfall we're going to get and also by word of mouth from local citizens what's going on," Conner said. "We do have a few places in the county that are populated low-lying areas and we have to keep a close eye on those."

Conner says other public safety officials have been watching where Debby goes after North Florida. He says they're making calls to prepare.

"Being ready means we're starting to get our chainsaws cranked up, making sure they're running, making sure all of our generators are fully gassed," Conner said.

Conner says major highways around McRae-Helena lead into the county. He says if they are leaving Savannah, for example, they will come through Telfair County.

Grocery store manager Randy Widener says people are getting water and dry goods at the Piggly Wiggly in McRae.

Widener says each year when a storm or hurricane comes, more people are coming to the store to stock up. He says the county is in good hands because of the emergency management crews like Conner.

"The phone company, the light company, everything seems to be very well and be prepared. And I think like I said I think we've learned from the past storms on what to do," Widener said.
