DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A 15-year-old boy is dead following a shooting Tuesday night in DeKalb County, police said. On Thursday, officers announced the arrest of three people.
Around 6:35 p.m., officers were called to the 3300 block of Peppertree Circle in Decatur and located the boy.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been released. The medical examiner told 11Alive the boy's name is Romello Heard.
Police said they arrested three people -- Chaz Lawson, Monterie Junious and Cameron Jackson -- who are charged with felony murder and robbery.
The victim's family said Heard, who went to Stone Mountain High School, was one of 12 kids. They said he was shy, cool and an observant person who lit up the room with his energy.
Family members are feeling confused and hurt over the crime, they said. Mattie Morgan, a neighbor, said she came home from the store to find Heard's body lying in the street.
"I broke down crying, really, with all this killing going on with these teenagers, this needs to stop," Morgan said. "I still feel safe living here. As long as you stay to yourself and mind your own business, you’re safe and stay out from around the wrong people, you’re safe.”
An online fundraiser was started by Heard's family to pay for burial costs.
