MACON, Ga. — On Sunday, a fire destroyed at least three houses on Macon's Walnut Street. It destroyed three historic, century-old homes and damaged several others.
Neighbors told us no one was seriously hurt, but Megan Orr said it's a day she's never going to forget.
"I got my car, my phone, my keys, and boots, and my other cat. That was all I was able to grab," Orr said.
She woke up to a neighbor telling her the house was on fire. She only had minutes to find her two cats, and one of them didn't make it.
"And by that time like the house was so much on fire they made me get out cause they said it was too hot. And by the time I was running out of the house, I had to jump through flames and it just hurt so much," Orr said.
Now she hopes somebody can take a look at what's left of her life, and learn something from it.
"I just hope that if there's ever a fire, just please contain it. It has ruined my whole year by this point. My birthday's like in 11 days and I don't think I'm gonna be able to enjoy it," Orr said.
She rented her duplex with Victoria Carruthers and Brannon Swain, who just took a big step in their relationship.
"Officially moved all his stuff in last week and now we have nothing," Carruthers said.
She said her dog woke them up, and if they slept in for just 10 more minutes, they might not be alive today.
"It's scary. It's truly scary. And to think we've just lost everything in a matter of minutes. In a matter of minutes, everything you have is gone," Carruthers said.
Macon-Bibb Fire Chief Shane Edwards told us they're still investigating the cause. Six houses and one car were damaged from the fire.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office arrested a man this morning who was obstructing first responders, and refused to leave the area. As of 9 p.m. Sunday, Lt. Kyle Murray with the Macon-Bibb fire department says the person is being considered as a person of interest.
