BALDWIN COUNTY, Ga. — Four Central Georgia sheriffs say their deputies can now drive marked patrol cars to church services.
This comes nearly two weeks after a gunman opened fire in Texas just days before the new year.
Laurens County Sheriff Larry Dean took to Facebook with the news saying in part, effective immediately, deputies will be able to drive their patrol vehicles to worship.
Dean says the purpose of the post was to inform people living in Laurens County about the changes so they wouldn't be alarmed. He says this will give his office a more visual presence throughout the county.
Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massee also posted on Facebook with a similar message.
Massee says a place of worship should remain sacred and safe and they will do our best to ensure that continues.
Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran, also took to Facebook informing citizens about deputies being allowed to drive patrol cars to church. He went on to ask the community to support his office's efforts to keep everyone safe.
Hancock County Sheriff Terrell Primus says his deputies will also have a visible presence at local churches.
