Central Georgia sees less than an hour average voting wait times

Many voters say they've spent an hour or more, while others say they've been able to breeze right on by.

MACON, Ga. — Around the state, many voters are out standing in lines for Georgia’s U.S. Senate runoff.

As poll workers do everything, they can to make sure you cast your ballots, some things are out of their control, like wait times.

When it comes to voting, some prefer to join the line at the right time.

"I passed because I saw too many cars but today, I thought it looked fine and I could vote today," Sandra Asbell said outside of a polling location.

Others want to get the job done.

"It isn’t something like a surprise. You already knew you were going to do this. This here has been going on for months and months and you knew you were going to have to come here so yes, you need to sit there and wait and vote,” Larry Thomas said.

For some, its importance outweighs all.

"Line was a little long, longer than expected, but it's important to vote,” Michael Nobles said as he waited to vote.

Around Central Georgia, wait times vary. Many voters say they've spent an hour or more, while others say they've been able to breeze right on by.

"I'd say about 15 minutes," Nobles said.

More than a million Georgians have already cast their vote, and almost 15% of active voters in Jones County have voted early. The largest group in the turnout, those aged 65-70 years old.

"Monday, 803, Tuesday, 832, Wednesday, 884, so whatever that adds up to," Jones County elections superintendent Marion Hatton said.

Hatton is one of just three people working the polls in jones county. While long lines plague a lot of counties, average times peak about 30 to 40 minutes.

"Waiting times have been up to 30 minutes. We have seen, on average, a little over 100 an hour. It’s been great, the turnout has been incredible,” she explained.

Hatton says there's been a lot of diversity in voters and says even if those lines get long, she encourages you to stay put.

“A few weeks ago, the lottery was way up in billions, and I saw on television where people were waiting 4 hours to buy a lottery ticket. if you're going to do that, please take 30 minutes to stand in line to vote," Hatton said.

Early voting ends Friday.  If you need to find your polling location, check out our election guide.
