'It makes me feel supported': Local Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority chapter hosts community baby shower

Project Cradle Care is a resource program for pre-natal and post-partum mothers aimed to address the health challenges women of color face during pregnancy.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — A local sorority hosted a free community baby shower on Saturday at the Houston County Galleria Mall in Warner Robins.

Project Cradle Care is a free community baby shower hosted by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated's Fort Valley-Macon Chapter

It's an education and resource program for pre-natal and post-partum mothers aimed to address the many health challenges that women of color face during pregnancy.

They're providing prenatal items and community resources to these mothers to support them during a time when they need it the most.

Ashanti White is the chair of Project Cradle Care. She said this gives these moms a chance to get the resources and information they need to care for themselves and their bundles of joy.

"It takes a village," White said. "The moms can't do it by themselves. We're actually out here doing the footwork to try to provide for the community the best way that we can."

White said events like this make her feel like she's fulfilling her purpose of greater service, greater progress, greater women, and a greater world.

"The basis of what we do outside of brotherhood and sisterhood and fellowship and scholarship is the service," White said. "That is a big part of what we are and we are here to serve."

Nia Brown came with her son and mother to check it out and learn more about the support system and family resources.

"I received some diapers, a goodie bag, a beautiful pack and play, and I also received some resources from Houston County Health Department as well," Brown said.

Brown said a lot of women and mothers need help, and Project Cradle Care has the tools and free resources these mothers should utilize.

"It makes me feel supported for sure," Brown said. "Also, having the resources makes you more prepared for motherhood. Even though it's the second time around for me, I think having those resources makes you more confident."

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. will also be having a youth symposium in March.

They'll discuss topics with youth and teens about self-care and self-awareness, mental health, and what's going on in the community.
