Humane Society offers up reward for information on abandoned and abused puppy thrown off a bridge

The puppy, named Guy Payne, was found in a blue, black and gray backpack with broken bones, a broke spine and a bludgeoned and missing eye

MACON, Ga. — The Humane Society of the United States is offering up a $5,000 dollar reward for information on the person or people responsible for throwing a puppy off a bridge in Macon, according to a press release.

On May 21, the Macon-Bibb County Sheriff's office was alerted that an injured puppy was found on railroad tracks.

Witnesses said they saw two suspects traveling in a four-door sedan along Mead Road that threw a blue, black and gray backpack off a bridge onto the tracks.

The witnesses opened the bag to find the injured puppy, now named Guy Payne, who SOS Rescue GA estimated to be about 10 weeks old.

After x-rays, it revealed that Guy Payne had multiple fractures and needed multiple surgeries. A Facebook post from Kerri Fickling with SOS Rescue GA said he specifically has broken ribs, a broken leg, two broken rear legs, a concussion and a possible broken spine.

Fickling added that the dog's right eye was bludgeoned and missing, as photos showed that parts of his fur around the eye are missing.

“Macon - you should be ashamed of yourself,” Fickling said on Facebook. “Someone knows who did this and needs to speak up. It starts with Animal abuse, then child abuse, spousal abuse, drugs then homicide. Speak out for those with no voice.”

The Humane Society initially put out a cruelty reward of $2,500, but increased it to $5,000 after a donation from an unnamed board member. The society hopes that the information will lead to the identification, arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible.

Anyone with information can call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 or the Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.

"The sickening abuse inflicted upon this defenseless puppy is inexcusable," said Kassi Bennett, case manager of Animal Crimes at the Humane Society of the United States. "We hope this reward encourages anyone with information to come forward and help us identify the person responsible for this horrific crime."
