SANDERSVILLE, Ga. — At First Baptist Church of Sandersville, Georgia Baptist Disaster and Relief Center is set up to help people in the community.
Ronnie Register has volunteered with the center for 15 years. He's gone a few places to serve.
“Louisiana, Mississippi and a whole lot of other states,” he said.
Register says there is never a dull moment, and that he gets to serve with someone he loves. When his first wife passed away, he never thought he could find love again. Then, he met his second wife at church.
“When we got married, we decided to do that to, to dedicate our life to serving. And this is our service,” he says.
Register says serving always blesses him and he enjoys helping people. The group started preparing for Helene early.
“Helene has caused more damage than anybody's ever seen in their life. It’s worse than Katrina and that it's way more widespread,” he says.
He says they have had around 700 requests for help in Central Georgia. That is why they're always asking for volunteers.
Right now, many are staying in the church. They wake up and help people, sometimes going to several places to serve. He says they will be working in Sandersville until Thanksgiving, helping people like Willis Chartley.
“It was pretty bad in my yard, I lost about almost all but two or three trees,” Chartley said.
Chartley heard about this center from a church friend, so he decided to come down to ask for help.
“That they will come help me, because I’ve had a stroke and I can't use my right arm and I can hardly walk. But any help is better than no help at all,” Chartley says.
Register shows compassion by treating everyone like a friend, but he says it blesses him more than he is blessing them.
He is in need of volunteers he says. If you want to come help, go to First Baptist Church of Sandersville.
