SAN ANTONIO — Five children will now spend this holiday season without their mother after a fatal accident earlier this month on the northwest side of San Antonio.
Police say 37-year-old Diana Martinez's Honda Odyssey was hit by two Ford Mustangs after picking up her sons from their new job.
“It’s been hard for me to see that, so I can just imagine what the boys feel," said Samantha Garcia, who owns a Weinerschnitzel franchise in the 1300 block of SW Loop 410, near Marbach Road.
Garcia says on December 5 just after 10 p.m., two employees had just finished their shifts and were picked up by their mother when she heard metal scraping against the roadway.
“So I ran outside and I noticed that it was two of my employees coming out of and they're just like 'My mom, my mom,'" said Garcia.
Garcia says she called out to her employees' mother.
“I was calling out 'Diana, Diana,' but nothing from her," said Garcia.
According to police, Martinez was turning from Waters Edge Drive onto the southbound lanes of SW Loop 410 access road, when she was in a crash with two Mustangs.
Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene. Both of Martinez's sons, Alex and Gilbert, survived the accident.
“I think they were in shock, not really realizing what was going on at that time," said Garcia.
Police say both drivers of the Mustangs stayed at the scene and alcohol was not a factor. But SAPD's Traffic Investigations is still looking into the crash.
Garcia wanted to do something for the family so she started a GoFundMe in hopes the community will rally behind the family this holiday season.
Garcia is also helping the boys by giving them an extra two weeks of pay while they recover from the trauma of the accident.
Garcia says it's been a tough and excruciating experience for everyone involved.
“Every day I wake up with it, it eats at me, so I can imagine how it feels to them," she said.
