Rules for legally setting off fireworks

Independence Day is just a couple of days away, but just because we are about to celebrate our freedom, doesn't mean you're free to shoot off fireworks whenever you please.

Independence Day is just a couple of days away, but just because we are about to celebrate our freedom, doesn't mean you're free to shoot off fireworks whenever you please.

Jeff Gannaway browsed through Sky King Fireworks in Macon, filling his cart for the Fourth of July.

For Gannaway, the 4th is more than just a celebration of freedom, but also a celebration of family.

"My 18-year-old son, soon to be 19, is born on the Fourth of July, 1999," Gannaway said

His excitement every year for the day is, well, explosive, which means a good show is always guaranteed.

"We got a really good open sky for it," Gannaway said, talking about his home in Juliette.

Gannaway says this wasn't his first trip to the fireworks store.

"I was in here a couple of weeks ago and bought like the big ones, the big finales and things," Gallaway said.

He says the party started early.

"I'm also here, too, because two nights ago, we kinda had a little show," Gallaway said.

So whether you're in the market for the smaller fireworks or something more impressive, there's a set of rules you must follow before setting them off or face the consequences.

"You'll have to pay the citation before the assigned court date, or you could appear if you want to appeal your case to the judge," Brad Wolfe, Captain of Patrol Operations at the Bibb County Sheriff's Office, said.

You can set off fireworks in Bibb County only between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., with the exception of four days of the year.

"July 3 and 4th, January 1, and December 31," Wolfe continued, "On those days you can use fireworks from 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. On January 1, you can go from midnight to 1 a.m."

Wolfe says the sheriff's office hasn't gotten many calls yet, but said that that'll change.

"It'll be steady until after the Fourth," Wolfe said.

Blue lights could end up coming to an early celebration of the red, white, and blue.

Wolfe says usually citations aren't more than $100.
