Atlanta civil rights leader known for using megaphone at protests dies: City Councilmember

Atlanta City Council member Michael Julian Bond issued a heartfelt statement Saturday on the passing of civil rights leader Rev. Fred D. Taylor.

ATLANTA — A chapter of history has come to a close following the announcement that one of Atlanta's civil rights leaders known for using a megaphone had died. 

Atlanta City Council Member Michael Julian Bond issued a heartfelt statement Saturday on the passing of civil rights leader Rev. Fred D. Taylor. 

The release said Taylor was known for his unique approach to leading protests with a megaphone and dedicated nearly 40 years of service to various roles within the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Bond added that Taylor's commitment to justice and equality significantly impacted the civil rights movement.

"Rest in power, Reverend Fred D. Taylor!" Bond said. "Rev. Taylor was a fearless crusader for justice and equality, whose example is one of pure self-sacrifice for the upliftment of others. Always standing upon what is right, he never failed to defend the least of these in our community."

Bond shared his personal journey with Taylor, expressing deep gratitude for the inspiration, guidance, and friendship he received from Taylor. 

"From being inspired by his example to being guided by his wisdom as a mentor, and finally, to cherishing his friendship, I am forever grateful," he's said. "I had the honor of recognizing his contributions at the City Council a few years ago."

Bond extended his deepest condolences to Taylor's family, affiliations, and the community that holds him dear. Taylor's legacy as a civil rights foot soldier and his contributions to the fight for justice and equality will be remembered and cherished by many in Atlanta and beyond.
