Man arrested, 6-year-old Cumming girl at center of Amber Alert and mother found safe in Mexico

It was issued just after midnight on Tuesday.

CUMMING, Ga. — A man is now facing kidnapping charges after a Forsyth County 6-year-old girl at the center of an Amber Alert and her mother were found safe in Mexico, police said Wednesday.

An Amber Alert was issued early Tuesday morning for the young girl from Cumming. According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, the 6-year-old and her mother were "believed to have been taken against their will" by the child's father.

Law enforcement determined the two were missing Monday after receiving two missing person calls. Cumming Police said officers were dispatched to Northside Forsyth Hospital Monday just before 2:30 p.m. in reference to a missing person, but didn't find anyone there, according to a department incident report.

Police said the mother's boyfriend made the call, but was not at the hospital. A report shows officers believed the man was at his home in Flowery Branch, Georgia.

CPD records show they also received another call from the mother's son. Chief David Marsh said he called police and reported she and the 6-year-old girl were missing.

Her son told officers his mother was dropping off her boyfriend at the hospital so he can pick up his truck, records show. She was then supposed to drive to her ex-husband's house to pick up the girl and take her to the hospital due to COVID, a CPD police report states.

Investigators said it is unknown what happened from that point on.

According to CPD, the 6 year old's father was out on bond for an incident involving her mother. It seems he removed an ankle monitor somewhere in Cobb County in an area nearby Six Flags, according to police.

He was wanted on several active warrants. Marsh said his violent history with the child's mother back in March was "cause for concern." The police chief said the mother's ex-husband recently held her at gunpoint and kidnapped her over the summer.

"The fact that he is very, very, very violent to her -- we certainly consider him to be dangerous," Marsh said.

Cumming Police said officials have now arrested the man, who is facing kidnapping charges and extradition. After working with "a handful of agencies," authorities have also located the girl and her mother safely in Mexico.

"I will only release limited details of his capture for now, but I am very thankful to the US Marshals and FBI for all the hard work," Marsh said.
