PULASKI COUNTY, Ga. — Pulaski County’s EMA director says a pilot is lucky to be alive after his plane crashed Friday night.
EMA Director and Fire Chief Leslie Sewell says the Federal Aviation Administration contacted his office after 9 p.m. Friday.
The FAA reported the last contact they had with the pilot was over Honey Bee Road near Highway 129 in Pulaski County, Sewell said.
That's about 3 miles outside the city of Hawkinsville.
The pilot managed to call 911 after crashing and was able to give first responders a better idea of where to find him.
Sewell says when they arrived on scene they found wreckage stretched 30 to 40 yards. The plane took down multiple trees.
“The crash just demolished the airplane, except the part where he was sitting in. It was turned upside down,” Sewell said. “I told him he was the luckiest man alive because he didn't even have one scratch on him.”
Sewell says the pilot, who has not been identified, was flying a twin-engine Piper PA-44 from Miami to Macon Friday night when he crashed.
He's registered as a commercial pilot out of Canada.
The FAA is still investigating the crash.
