MACON, Ga. — A new name has been entered into the race for state representative of District 149.
Phyllis Tufts Hightower made her official announcement on Saturday at city hall.
The seat is currently held by Cochran Republican Danny Mathis.
Hightower attended Jones County High School and attended Georgia College & State University.
She spent over 30 years working in mental health and 16 years working with incarcerated youthful offenders as a sex offender counselor, adjunct instructor, and the only full time art therapist working within the the Department of Juvenile Justice.
She said she hopes to represent the youth of Georgia and implement programs to help them succeed.
"Youthful offenders tend to make mistakes of course in their youth.. and I want to see programs be established that will not cancel out their future, and make sure that they have programs that will help them excel even though they've made mistakes," she said.
