PERRY, Ga. — The Perry Police Department is trying to piece together what led up to a 21-year-old man's fatal shooting near Creekwood Traffic Park Monday night, Maj. Heath Dykes with the police department says.
He says authorities responded to Ida Lassater Circle at around 6:38 p.m. where they found 21-year-old Mason Davis Holt of Warner Robins shot multiple times.
Dykes was among the officers who responded to the scene last night.
"By the time I got there, everything was taped off with crime scene tape," Dykes said.
While first responders offered first aid on the scene, Dykes said Holt died from his injuries on the way to a Macon hospital.
Holt was found outside of his car suffering multiple gunshot wounds, Dykes said, but they're still working to figure out what happened. They say it's possible he might have originally been shot in his car.
Murders and homicides are not very common in Perry, Dykes says, but they do happen.
"It's not that common for us to have one [a homicide], but you know, we do have them. When we do, we try to get them solved as quickly as possible," Dykes said. "We're working diligently to try and identify the shooter and what the motive behind it was."
Dykes says they are trying to follow the evidence and talk to the people who may be able to answer the question of what happened on Ida Lassater Circle.
"We're still running down some leads and some people who we think may have information for us," Dykes said.
Dykes emphasized the importance of speaking up if you know anything about what happened.
"We'd like to [hear from them] as soon as possible so that whatever they saw... won't be tainted by them hearing stuff elsewhere," he said.
Neighbors in the area described hearing what sounded like rapid gunfire. One man, who didn't wish to go on camera, said he chalked it up to fireworks.
If you have any information, Dykes asks you to call Perry Police Detectives Collin Howard or Detective Ike Wilcox at 478-988-2824.
"If anyone has any information at all, please come forth. If they want to stay anonymous we can work that out," Dykes said. "Please contact us at the Perry Police Department."
