PERRY, Ga. — The City of Perry is working to prevent future flooding. With more than 100 homes that could come to the area, they hope to avoid repeating past mistakes.
Across Georgia there are over 169,000 licensed nurses. When they need some time off, the Lighthouse Nursing Agency steps in to help.
"We cover all nursing health care agencies throughout the state of Georgia with nurses," Lighthouse Nursing Agency Vice President Stephanie Dodson said.
For over 20 years in Perry, Dodson says they've worked to fill the most urgent healthcare needs.
"Our psych crisis units, our rehab facilities currently," Dodson shared.
She says the the need for nurses can fluctuate. Their busiest time is the fall and spring, but there is also a need for nurses.
"That's what we started our business on to be able to provide service to our community. So there is a great need right now for nurses, and we're so glad that we can help our community," she said.
As communities grows, they work to help meet the needs that could come with higher demands.
"A lot of our nursing is done based on census. As busy or as full as the facilities are, that's where we fill the need," Dodson says.
More demand could soon be coming to their own street as over 100 homes are being proposed on the corner Keith Drive and Main Street for the Orchard on Main development.
Some people have concern that more families means more traffic on the already busy road. Plus they have concern for if city infrastructure can handle any more homes at this time.
One of the bigger concerns is the issue of potential flooding. Some worry that development also sits on a flood plain. Just five minutes down the road a community is still looking for flooding solutions for similar problems.
Now the city hopes to not repeat past mistakes. Leaders could put more money into preventing future flood problems. At a council meeting, Tuesday April 7, leaders agreed to work on creating a flood committee and get costs together for a flood analysis study.
The city only has the power power to approve or deny the part of the development builders requested annexation for. The current application plan says they hope to build over 130 home. However, if the city denies part of the project annexation into the city, they will build just under 100 homes.
Developers on the project will also be responsible for answering stormwater concerns along the way.
All of these steps must happen before a building permit is issued on the project. At the end of council, leaders agreed to bring back pricing updates for a study at their next work session Monday May 20.
