Perry leaders to discuss making upgrades to two parks

The Department of Leisure would like to make upgrades to Creekwood and Rozar Park. The first phase would include adding pickleball courts and soccer field upgrades.

PERRY, Ga. — Two Perry parks could get an upgrade soon. Leaders will meet Tuesday, during a pre-council meeting to hear a presentation on how they want to kick-start their plans.

Monday, Eve Scott hit the tennis courts at Barbara Calhoun Park before the rain came down.

"I just love playing the sport," Scott said.

For Scott, playing tennis is a form of expression.

"I like hitting the ball hard," she said. "It helps me process my emotions."

Weekly, she and her brother let it all out at Barbara Calhoun Park.

"I'd say three days to at least practice, since we live so close to here," she said.

Monday night's practice session wasn't all about letting out emotions.

"We're training for our tennis tournament next week in Orlando. It's the ATA," Scott said.

Scott is a varsity player for First Presbyterian Day School, so they also spend a lot of time traveling to Macon to play.

Barbara Calhoun is the only space that has courts used for tennis or pickleball. Now, the Department of Leisure wants to upgrade Creekwood Park.

They want to put six pickleball courts back near the basketball players. The extra space could save the Scott family occasionally on travel.

"Bonaire, Kathleen, around there - we usually have to go there, because sometimes it can get a little busy," Scott said.

The city's hoping to score points with other sports. They have plans to upgrade parts of Rozar Park, starting with working on the soccer fields, which could bring more people to different sports in Perry.

"It could get everyone together. The tennis community, also the pickleball community. It feels great when you have more courts and when your with people and the environment around," Scott said.

The city will talk about how they hope to phase in their park upgrades at Tuesday night's pre-council meeting. That starts at 5:00 p.m. in the City Hall building on Main Street.

Council documents show the first phase to build the courts and upgrading the soccer fields would cost around $500,000.

A city spokesperson said the funding could come from 2024 SPLOST funds. A timeline for the project could also be discussed Tuesday.
