PERRY, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is looking to update a bridge in Perry.
GDOT is looking to replace the bridge that sits over Big Indian Creek on Highway 41. They hope to make it a little more pedestrian-friendly.
On Friday, folks in Perry hit the pavement to enjoy the weather at Rotary Centennial Park.
"It's a beautiful day. My wife and I wanted to come out and have a picnic and hike the trails," Jack Holt said.
Like many others, Holt came to enjoy nature's treats.
"If we see some wildfire that be cool," Holt said.
He has the chance to explore trees and wildlife and can see lots on the Whitetail Trail.
"We were gonna hike that trail that goes under the trail and wherever it goes we were gonna check it out," Holt said.
Nina Marin's was out walking Friday too.
"It's nice, it's peaceful out here. There's lots of animals and the plants are really nice too," Marin said.
The park is so nice, she chose to get outside this spring break.
"It's sometimes spontaneously, but this time we did it two times in a week," she said.
However, a future project would temporarily halt people's view. The Department of Transportation says the bridge over the trail is in fair condition but could use upgrades.
Folks won't be able to walk down the Whitetail Trail that leads under the bridge during construction.
It will turn into a five-lane road with four-foot bike lanes and sidewalks in both directions. It is expected to take two years. The rest of the park will still be open, so everyone will still be able to enjoy the rest of the park.
The project was projected to start in 2025, but now the Department of Transportation says it won't start until 2026.
The Department of Transportation says when the project starts, detours will be available using Main Street, Carroll Street, and WF Ragin Drive.
