Taking out the trash | Perry raising awareness about free backdoor garbage program

Anyone with a condition that prevents them from walking their trash to the curb is able to apply for assistance.

PERRY, Ga. — Perry's Public Works Department wants to help more people use one of their free services - specially, one of their trash services.

Their disabled back door trash program helps the elderly and disabled community with their trash. Antonio Poole and Early Graham work as solid waste operators, making sure Perry stays clean.

"Our day to day operations consist of doing downtown," Graham said. "All the restaurants."

They say they pull cans from restaurants that can weigh up to 100 pounds. Poole says household trash weighs a bit too.

"Probably about 40 or 50 pounds," he said. "The truck holds four tons itself."

However, walking up and down the drive way, and carrying those loads isn't as easy as these guys make it look.

"We do backdoors every Monday for the elderly, if they aren't able to bring their garbage to the side of the road," Poole said.

Public Works Superintendent Ansley Fitzner says they just put out an official policy and application for the program. It's a way to better streamline their process, and clearly lay out rules and expectations.

Fitzner says people in town may not know about it, and some people may find it helpful.

"This is kind of a step above and beyond that allows people to feel like they are a part of the community that cares," she said.

Graham says he's seen the impact it has on the group of people they currently serve through the program. He hopes more people across Central Georgia pick up the program.

"Hopefully other counties will start seeing what we're doing and start taking the initiative to do it as well," Graham said.

You can find the application here.

It lists all the expectations including the need for a doctor's approval, and the need to bag your trash.
