'It goes right back into our community': Perry encourages shopping local for Small Business Saturday

Shopping will begin in downtown Perry at 10 a.m., and the city will set up a table with bingo cards and have a tree lighting ceremony.

PERRY, Ga. —
Right here in Central Georgia, the City of Perry is encouraging you to come spend your dollars in the heart of downtown.

The Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving is typically prime shopping time.

As shoppers flood stores all over the state of Georgia, the city of Perry is encouraging you to shop their Small Business Saturday.

"It's just a lot of fun. We've been doing it probably 6 or 7 years, we get a lot of community support. It’s just a fun day,” Trish Cossart said.

Cossart has had Cossart Design on Carroll Street since 2007.

She says the city does a great job supporting its small businesses and believes the twist they put on this year's shopping will bring people in.

"The whole idea of the bingo card, and you want to fill up the bingo card, it’s kind of incentivizing people to go into different stores, maybe stores they haven't been into before so yes, I think it’s a great community activity,” Cossart said.

A bingo card with 16 spaces and a chance to win city prizes, giving people an opportunity to shop and have fun while doing it.

"Anything from taking a photo with one of our murals downtown and posting it online and tagging @shopdowntownperry on Facebook or Instagram. Or you could also buy something, and buy something cozy or buy a tasty treat,” she said.

Alicia Hartley, the city's downtown manager, says the Bingo idea is new for 2022, but the idea of pouring money back into downtown it’s one that she hopes will last forever.

"Small Business Saturday is really important for our downtown because shopping small keep those dollars local. It goes right back into our community, it keeps jobs here locally, and keeps our community and downtown as vibrant as it can possibly be,” Hartley explained.

The City of Perry will have a table to give out the bingo cards as well as some merchants.

Shops will open Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

Use the cards just like regular bingo, win a tote bag. Clear all 16 spaces, and you could win 250 Downtown Dollars.

At 6 p.m. there will be a tree lighting where the winners of the bingo raffle will be announced.
