On any given day, you'll hear the sound of a train chugging through Fort Valley, and you may also be stuck sitting at one of the intersections.
Mayor Barbara Williams says it was even an issue when she was in college back in the late 1960s.
"You could leave Fort Valley State College then, now university, come downtown, and if you had a class at 1:00, you were going to be late getting to class because of the train," she says.
The issue? There's a switching station in town and trains sit as railcars are moved around. The Main Street intersection has a front row seat.
Railroad Cafe sits next to the intersection. Bob Leavitt comes here to watch the trains and take pictures for his collection. "The railroads were here long before we had roads. They were here prior to the Civil War, especially this line here in Fort Valley."
Leavitt has studied the railroad system throughout Central Georgia for over 25 years. He says judging by the traffic and railroad placement, there's really only one solution that would work in Fort Valley. "It's gonna take another overpass here in Fort Valley and another overpass with a lot more capacity."
That's one of the solutions city leaders are discussing with the Georgia Department of Transportation.
That meeting is scheduled for Tuesday morning in Atlanta. Some of the other possible solutions include moving the switch station and eliminating one of the intersections altogether.
