Officers follow leads into apartment expecting to find escaped inmates, find wanted man hiding instead

Officers found Christian Williams with a "self-inflicted gunshot wound" upon arriving at the Pines on Vineville.

MACON, Ga. — One week after four inmates escaped jail, police found a wanted man.

But, they say, that man is not one of the four escapees.

It was Christian Williams — the man who evaded officers over 7 months ago.

Back in March, Williams was allegedly kidnapped only hours before heading to trial on Murder.

Sheriff David Davis insists the fugitives will be caught in due time.

"I don't mean to be facetious about it — this is our singular focus, is to get these individuals arrested," he said. "Everybody at the sheriff's office, everybody in local law enforcement is involved and is working to get these folks recaptured."

Davis said almost every officer in Central Georgia is on the hunt, including his 500 deputies and about 50 officers with the FBI and U.S. Marshal Service.

A tip-off sent them to the Pines on Vineville early Monday morning where officers were met with gunshots through the door of unit 6.

That's when they stepped back and waited for Bibb County's SWAT team, Davis said.

"When the SWAT team came, they went back to the apartment," he said. "At that time, a person who had been inside the apartment opened the door and told em' there was a person down in the apartment."

At no point were any weapons deployed by officers, Davis said.

The sheriff's office confirmed the injured person is Christian Williams. They say he shot himself.

They also confirmed the person who led officers to him was his girlfriend, Mykia Williams.

According to jail records, she was arrested around 9:14 a.m. and is charged with helping a suspect evade authorities.

Jose Cortez, the maintenance technician, said he had no idea what was happening when he arrived for work.

The apartment complex is less than 2 miles, or a 5-minute drive, from the jail where four inmates escaped last Monday.

The complex has 40 units, according to Cortez.

When the inmates escaped last week, Cortez said he had concerns being not too far from the jail.

Davis said he's following leads wherever they are.

"If we could get a lead to New York, we'd follow that," Davis said.

The sheriff said online speculation spreading on social media hinders law enforcement from making progress. Instead, he encourages people to pick up the phone.

"How insignificant that it might seem, we still want them to make that call," he said.

However, Monday's tips did not lead them to any direct suspects.

Yet, Davis thinks the people involved in the incident, including Williams, have some connection to the escaped inmates.

"Let me make that clear — he is not one of our escapees," Davis said. "But, he is a person that, we feel, has knowledge of where they might be, that has knowledge of the escape, and who has some connection to at least 1 or 2 of the people we're looking for."

The sheriff said Williams, the wanted man, is in critical condition at Atrium Health Navicent.

His girlfriend, Mykia Williams, was booked into the Bibb County Jail for helping Williams evade capture.
