VERIFY: New residential development headed for land across from Mossy Creek Middle School?

The developer expects to build about 150 homes there

It started with a tweet that someone took a screenshot of and sent to the 13WMAZ newsroom.

A few weeks ago, Cason Anderson wrote online that he "heard through the grapevine the big field across from Mossy Creek Middle School will be built up by Hughston Homes." He went on to say the houses would be "box type, shotgun houses." He described them as "future slums."

So how much of that is true?

At least some of it.

According to data available through the Houston County Tax Assessor's office, 13WMAZ can verify the developer Hughston Homes did buy more than 30 acres of land across from Mossy Creek Middle School in late October 2018. It's classified for residential use.

But as for the claim that the new development will become "future slums," Hughston Homes pushed back hard against that.

There's "absolutely no truth to that," said Hughston Homes area manager and listing agent Jason Lee. "Our mission with Hughston Homes is to build the largest quality home at the most affordable price for the average working family out here in Houston County."

Lee said every house in the Mossy Creek development would be a single-family home. He added that although it was too early in the project to put an expected price point on the new homes, they'd be designed in a style similar to the Summer Branch neighborhood in Kathleen, a stylish suburb with rows of midsize homes.

If the Mossy Creek development ends up looking anything like that, it will be a far cry from a slum.

Lee said groundbreaking on the homes at Mossy Creek is expected in early 2020.

He expects around 150 homes to be built there.
