Neighbors excited as Macon's Henry Burns Park nears completion

The county began construction on Henry Burns Park in May 2017.

Macon's Henry Burns Park is only a few days away from opening. Just in time for families to have a fun place to relax and enjoy the warm summer weather.

Neighbors Steve Wilson and Susan Cable have each called Macon’s Ingleside neighborhood home for more than 40 years.

“When we first moved here in 1972, it was simply a hole in the ground with a big drainage ditch that ran through it,” says Wilson.

Now that same spot is Henry Burns Park.

“A beautiful mini park right in the heart of the neighborhood,” says Wilson.

And thanks to some renovations, Wilson and Cable say it is a place where their grandkids will soon get to play.

“Once it gets open, everybody’s going to be down here. We believe all the families will be here enjoying it,” says Cable.

But they say they have been waiting several months for the park to open. A delay Bibb’s SPLOST Coordinator, Clay Murphey, says was mainly because of weather.

“Because it’s on a hill and on the bottom, it stays wet, so you can’t pull heavy equipment in when it rains,” says Murphey.

But Murphey says there is just a little landscaping left to do and then the park will be ready to open.

“Lots of playgrounds, benches, picnic tables,” says Murphey.

Murphey says one of the most unique aspects of this park is an inclusive playground. It includes swings that children who are in wheelchairs can get on.

All in all, Murphey says the $720,000 project took almost a year. But both Wilson and Cable say they cannot wait to make more memories there. This time with their grandkids.

Murphey says the park will be open next week, but he says the county will have an official opening the week of April 13th.
