MACON, Ga. — Mrs. Leah Skinner has been a teacher for three years, and she has spent two of them at Monroe County Middle School.
She teaches math and is passionate about the subject. She told Junior Journalist Amarion Jones that she loves helping her students connect what they learn in the classroom with everyday life.
But student Braev Bogle nominated Mrs. Skinner for so much more than that.
"When she's explaining a topic we are doing that day, she takes her time and she does a great job...she is my first period teacher and starts our day with positivity," Bogle explained in his letter.
And the enthusiasm for Mrs. Skinner doesn't end with Bogle. Upon accepting her award, her classroom erupted with excited cheers.
Amarion Jones asked Skinner what her favorite thing about teaching was.
"I love the entertainment, again, all the kids are really funny, fun to be around, and very loving as well," she said. "I also love to see those lightbulb moments of whenever a kid might not understand the math concept and then all of the sudden they get it."
The passion for her subject and genuine encouragement for her students is evident when you step into Skinner's classroom. She takes the time to help each student individually and does her best to make math a fun and exciting subject.
"I really love teaching and I put in a lot of hard work...it's great to see they have an appreciation for it as well," Skinner said.
