PERRY, Ga. — It's not everyday that we get a submission from a primary school, but when we do we know it has to be special!
Junior Journalist Ryleigh Thomas headed down to Houston County to Langston Road Primary School to surprise Mrs. Scannell with her My Teacher is Tops Award. Her second graders shared an enthusiastic cheer as Ryleigh handed her the award, but her nomination came from student Eva Wells.
Mrs. Scannell teaches all subjects, but in her letter Eva expressed that math is her favorite, and she loves the way that Mrs. Scannell creates fun visual and hands-on experiences to make their learning more fun. She also told us in her letter that Mrs. Scannell taught her older brother, which Eva finds "super cool"!
Mrs. Scannell has been teaching for 21 years, but only at Langston Road Primary for about 1 and 1/2 years, just after the opening of the new primary school. Her coworkers describe her as "one of the most dynamic teachers [they] have ever known," and it's evident in her classroom that Scannell tries to make learning an immersive experience.
Scannell says she loves teaching second grade because she gets to help students solidify the skills and knowledge they obtained from kindergarten and first grade, and she really enjoys helping her students prepare for third grade. But its clear by being in her classroom that Scannell goes beyond just teaching her students the fundamentals.
Scannell's students love her, and the feeling is mutual. She told Ryleigh that she loves being a teacher, describing her students as "the best kids in the world."
Congratulations Mrs. Scannell!
