MACON, Ga. — On Tuesday, 13WMAZ Junior Journalist Lanie Wright took a trip to Porter Elementary to surprise this week’s top teacher.
Christie Cavender teaches third grade and was nominated by her student, Cameron Guy.
He says Ms. Cavender pushes the class past their limits.
“She pushes us to do our very best and believes in us when we don't believe in ourselves,” wrote Guy.
Cavender says that although she's a teacher, it's very exciting to reach students on a more personal level through their learning.
“I'm overwhelmed,” she said. “I never thought that I would be qualified for that. I think it's an awesome opportunity that the students recognize the teachers not only for just what they do, but it also is a personal part of their life that I'm not just a teacher… I'm also an instrument in their learning.”
Principal Chris Kirby says he's grateful for the relationships Cavender has been able to build with her students.
“I'm extremely proud to have a staff member who's being recognized as [a top teacher] that goes beyond what the district could recognize or what I can recognize as a principal. That student in the classroom is recognizing a teacher for the relationships that she's forged with the students and for the teaching quality that she brings every day to the classroom. [It] means the very most to all of us here at the school,” said Kirby.
Every week we like to shine a spotlight on teachers who make a difference in the lives of their students.
