'So many moms are hurting': Mother's Day can be a time of grieving for some in Central Georgia

Mother's Day is just a few days away, and while some are celebrating others may be healing. That includes mothers who have lost a child.

MACON, Ga. — Mother's Day is just a few days away; while some are celebrating, others may be healing. That includes mothers who have lost a child. Two Macon moms are trying to help other women heal a wound that may be felt for years.

"They told me the baby didn't have a heartbeat," says Rachel Huston

Huston's lost her child Avery in a miscarriage over five years ago.

"You already start having dreams and desires for that child, then all of a sudden, that child isn't going to come to be like you had planned," says Huston.

She says she still thinks about Avery every Mother's Day.

"I was a mother too. Even though I had lost my child, I was still a mother," says Huston.

She's not the only mom that may experience grief on Mother's Day. The National Institutes of Health reports that up to 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, leaving many moms asking the question, "Why me."

Monica Stevens-Kirby is raising a child, but she, too, miscarried. Now both moms help put together a service for those who have grief around Mother's Day.

"The type of support I think we can offer is a sacred space. It doesn't matter if you're Christian; it's not about religion," says Kirby.

Kirby says it's about helping someone who may be grieving and needs support. Expect music, time for prayer, meditation, and a moment to shine a light on the darkness someone may experience.

"We celebrate moms so much on Mother's Day, and we forget that so many moms are hurting," says Huston.

The event happens this Thursday at 6 p.m. At First Baptist Church of Christ in Macon. If you're grieving the loss of a child, have a strained relationship with your mom, or even if you want to support these mom's that are hurting, you are welcome to come.
