MACON, Ga. — Another furniture store in Macon is getting ready to close its doors for good. This time, it's Moore's Furniture on Riverside Drive.
It was started in 1984 by Mildred Moore, current owner Mimi Schilling's mother.
"She was so sweet and just had, had you just eating out of your hands," Mimi Schilling said.
It was her mom that she thinks was the reason behind the business's success. It all started with a simple idea.
"My mother was bored 'cause we had gotten out of the house and all, so she had some friends that did some decorating and she said I wouldn't mind a furniture store," Mimi Schilling said.
So the original store was born on Shurling Drive. Then, it moved to the corner of Wimbish and Riverside Drive. The store at Riverside Drive today is three stories and has everything from bedroom sets to lounge chairs.
But the family business will end with Schilling and her husband, Drew Schilling.
"We're getting too old. And then I- my children have their own jobs and all, and they're not interested," Mimi Schilling said. "So you know, there was nobody to pass it down to."
Her husband said running the business over the years hasn't been easy.
"Before the pandemic, special order sofas were here in four to six weeks. Pandemic, it was eight to 12 months," Drew Schilling said.
They said the customers are what they'll miss the most about running the store.
"You made it such a pleasure to work with. Because each- you know it was just fun. You know everything about the person," Mimi Schilling said.
Her husband said they've had a good, long run.
"We're just ready to just say thank you for everything, from everybody in this community. Because it's just been amazing," Drew Schilling said.
The Schilling family plans to sell the Moore's Furniture building.
They said the new owners plan to open a furniture store under a different name.
Everything is currently up to seventy percent off. They're open 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m.
