MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — A Monroe County girl and her family are dealing with an inoperable brain tumor and mounting medical bills. That is why people are coming together to support Madeline Sanders.
Friday is Mighty Madeline Monroe Day, or at least that is what people in the Monroe County told 13WMAZ. Local businesses are donating part of their proceeds to support Madeline, who is in the hospital in Atlanta.
Close to a dozen businesses in downtown Forsyth are donating 10% of each customer's check to support Madeline. The support comes after a regular headache turned out to be a brain tumor.
"It, all of sudden, came on last week -- went to school, she was fine, and by the end of the day, they were transporting her to Atlanta to put in some brain drains," Pam Davis said.
Family friend Pam Davis says the news hit the town hard, so they found a way to help the Sanders family.
"I think it is important for us to come together, because right now, it is such a scary situation for them. They do not know what each day holds," Misti Tonn said.
"If it was my child, I would want that rally, I would want the support behind my family," Lori Andrews said.
And even Madeline's classmates are helping in their own way.
"We are making projects for her -- cards," Sam Elder said.
"They come and support us when we're not even going through tough times, and this is just what we do here," local employee Madison Knowles said.
Organizers say at the end of the day they are not doing this for recognition, but instead to support one another.
