MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — After a Monroe County fire station burned down a little over a year ago, a donation from a power company is providing a fresh start.
Oglethorpe Power donated the land.
Last year, a fire truck caught fire inside Monroe County's Fire Station 10 on Evans Road, leading to a total loss.
On Monday, county commissioners, State Rep. Dale Washburn, and others came together to put the shovel in the new site off Rumble Road to make it official. Fire Chief Matt Jackson says most of the department’s calls are on the interstate. The prime location helps to better serve the county and its surrounding areas.
“This is a huge benefit for Monroe County. We've been looking for land to build this station and expand the station. Of course, our original station 10 burned down a little over a year ago, and this property is the perfect piece of property that's going to give us room to grow over the years,” Jackson said.
The fire station is estimated to be completed sometime in 2023.
The county bought land in June of 2021 for a fire station in High Falls, and
that project is still in the design phase.
