Monroe Co. Schools discusses Hubbard Middle School's future

Monroe County Schools says they're starting the discussion on if they should begin renovations and invest money, or if they shouldn't bring students back at all.

Before the school year started, Hubbard Middle school ran into a problem with flooding and mold that forced students to leave their school and start classes at another campus.

Daphine Perkins taught 6th grade over at Hubbard Middle School. She runs her classroom the same, but within different walls. To her, the change seems minor.

"Everything went smooth -- if you would've walked into the building, you would've never known that we would have to make a transition like this," says Perkins.

With around 200 students added, 900 fill the building. It's not a perfect fit, but they found extra room. "We were ready. We looked the part, and we were the part," says Principal Efrem Yarber.

Now Superintendent Jackson Daniel says they're looking into how to move forward with Hubbard Middle. He says the repair estimate came in around $5 million, but that number isn't set in stone. While board members explore options, students and faculty make a bad situation into a good one.

"It was kind of like a feeling of disconnect but now we're under one roof and we're unified and I think the teachers are happy about that." says Yarber.

And back in Mrs Perkins class, positive thoughts abound. "It's a smooth transition. I don't think it could've worked out better," says Perkins.

Monroe County Schools says they're starting the discussion on if they should begin renovations and invest money, or if they shouldn't bring students back at all.

No official meetings are set to discuss the future of Hubbard Middle School campus yet, but Jackson Daniel says that should happen within the next few months.
