Monroe Co. deputies stop drivers to give cash, not tickets

This is a part of the sheriff's office's Secret Santa mission. They received a $9,000 anonymous donation to hand out to unsuspecting drivers.

Seeing blue lights flash behind your car oftentimes brings fear to drivers. It usually means you broke the law and a ticket is on the way.

But here in Monroe County, Deputy Nicholas Ortiz gave traffic violators $100 each in the spirit of the holiday season.

This is a part of the sheriff's office's Secret Santa mission. They received a $9,000 anonymous donation to hand out to unsuspecting drivers.

Some say it took them by surprise.

"It's pretty good. It was the exact opposite of what I was expecting," says Caitlin Hayes. Planning to use the money to visit family, "we will probably put it towards our flight to Ohio for Christmas."

The project started 4 years ago as a way to help build relationships between the community and law enforcement.

Others receiving the cash decided to spread their wealth.

"Well, I might just see what they think. Maybe we might even donate it," says one Monroe Co. driver.

The sheriff's office plans to hand out $100 bills until the entire donation is gone, so more Christmas surprises are in store for Monroe County drivers.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office wants to remind people normal law enforcement is still happening and if they break the law, they shouldn't expect $100.
