Venomous snake possibly sighted in Milledgeville

A venomous snake was reportedly seen two days ago in Milledgeville.
This is the gaboon viper that reported seen two days ago in Milledgeville.

A woman says she saw a deadly venomous snake two days ago in Milledgeville.

Lora Brown, who reported the sighting, says she saw the reptile crossing the street.

"I saw a snake crawling on the road, and I stopped on the road to look to see if I was seeing what I was seeing, and I took a picture with my phone," said Brown.

According to Mark McKinnon with the Department of Natural Resources - Law Enforcement Division, a gaboon viper was seen near the intersection of Hairwood Drive and Harrisburg Road. McKinnon said the snake is not native to Georgia.

McKinnon said there is no need for panic, but the DNR wanted to make the public aware that it could still be out there. He also said to not walk through deep brush or shrubs.

DNR authorities tell us the gaboon viper is originally from South Africa and produces very deadly venom. They say its venom kills in approximately 15 minutes.

McKinnon said an investigation with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is underway, and is working to verify the credibility of the report.

Sgt. Bo Kelly, with the DNR's Law Enforcement Division, said patrols are being made through the area several times a day. He said he can't prove or disprove the snake is in the area. He warns the public to not approach any snake, even if it's the viper. If sighted, please call 911.
