BALDWIN COUNTY, Ga. — Tom Glover, with Bike Walk Baldwin, says he loves riding mountain bikes. Now, there may be a new trial near Walter B Williams Park on Highway 22 for biking enthusiasts to enjoy
Glover joined forces with Kenny Griffin of the Georgia Cycling Association. Together, they talked with Baldwin County manager Carlos Tobar about raising money and making the trail a reality.
However, it took over a year for Glover, Griffin and Tobar to finalize the plans for the trial. With $15,000 from Glover and Griffin, which was matched, they now have the funding to start making the trail a reality.
"Our goal here is really to raise awareness with mountain biking and to get more kids out on bikes and out in nature," he said. "And given the traffic we have at Walter B Willimans and the proximity to lot of areas of our community, it was a great place for us to create trails."
For Glover, he says that mountain biking can be a great hobby. He started riding with his daughter and he says it changed his life and inspired him to start coaching children in the sport.
After over a decade of coaching, he says it has made him want to create more mountain bike trails for Milledgeville. Eventually, he hopes to be a part of the International Mountain Biking Association.
"We would like to become an IMBA ride center which the qualifications of that is 50 miles of trail," he said.
Glover says when they finish the trail they will have around 27 miles of trail. Glover says he hopes to see more children riding. Like Glover Griffin says he loves mountain biking.
"I started mountain biking and racing at a young age I loved it because it teaches you some really core principles in your youthful years as you're developing as a young child," he said.
All told, the trail would be 5 miles in length, Glover said. It is expected to open this weekend.
