150 years ago Saturday, in his historic March to the Sea, Union Army General William Sherman established headquarters at the Old Governor's Mansion in Milledgeville.
Saturday, the mansion hosted two tours re-enacting scenes from that time. It included federal soldiers in uniform holding equipment who spoke with visitors and answered questions.
Director Matthew Davis says many of the displays were events that happened to the day, 150 years ago.
He says, "We are observing the sesquicentennial, the 150th anniversary of Sherman's occupation at the Executive Mansion here in Milledgeville, we have reenacted the flag raising above the house that occurred at that time, the signal to the community to capture that house and the Old Governors Mansion was actually used as Sherman's headquarters when he occupied the building on November 23rd."
The mansion is now part of Georgia College and State University's campus. If you missed the tour, they're ongoing each week.
