'People look over them' | How one Central Georgia community is coming together to support special needs locals

The prom - which is open to the public - will be from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — In Milledgeville, Primecare Pediatric will be hosting a special needs prom. It's called "A Night With the Stars."

Chris Williams says he loves to dance. That's why he says he is excited for "A Night with The Stars."

Williams says he went last year and loved it.

“It was fun, we do a lot of everything - we dance and eat a lot of everything,” he says.

For mom Tracy Gordan, she says it's a blessing to see Chris getting to go to prom.

Gordan says she is grateful her son has someone like Donnie 'D-Boy' Cannie who will put on events like this.

“I love it, because they don't get the opportunity to do that because people look over them and make them feel like they ain't nothing," she said. "I like it because D-Boy is giving them the opportunity to do what they want to do."

She says she just wants her son to know how worthy he is.

"Pushing him because he wants to be like normal people. But I keep telling him, 'You are normal, ain't nothing stopping you for what you want to do. It's up to you to start starting what you want to do,'" she said.

Cannie said had the idea for a special needs prom because his niece has special needs. He says he met with Primecare Pediatric and they decided on having a prom.

Chris says he considers Cannie a father figure.

"He is a cool guy. I pick him up, take him with me and show him things," Cannie said. "And it's working."

Williams even got to be in one of Cannie's music videos.

The event is open to the public from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Midway Event Center.
