'Extra special': Central Georgia hospitals celebrate 1st babies born in 2024.

It’s a day to celebrate the new including some of the newest Central Georgians.

MACON, Ga. — It’s a day to celebrate the new including the newest and tiniest Central Georgians.

Atrium Health Navicent’s first baby of 2024 is Amelia Mendez. She arrived at 4:14 a.m. on January 1. Her parents are Luis and Xiomara Mendez of Lizella. Young Amelia checked in at 19.5 inches and 6 pounds, 14 ounces.

Her parents told us her actual due date was Saturday but they’re glad she is here.

“Extra special. She decided to, you know, make her own entrance and do her own thing. I think that says a lot about her already,” Xiomara said. “Very blessed, it was definitely a surprise but we’re so excited she’s here.”

Over at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin, nurses and doctors gave a warm 2024 welcome to Ella Jean Newton. She is the first baby of the new year at Fairview. She was born just before 7 a.m. to parents Victoria and Chandler.

Doctor Chism delivered the 6 pound, 10 ounce bundle of joy. We’re wishing both families the best in 2024.
