Man wrecks car after chase in Bibb County

The chase reportedly started in Houston County near Perry.

MACON, Ga. — UPDATE, 4:15 p.m.:

According to the Georgia State Patrol, at around 11 a.m. Tuesday, a trooper from GSP's Perry post tried to stop a car on Watson Boulevard near Tom Chapman Boulevard in Houston County. The driver, later identified as 33 -year-old Christopher Rodriguez, didn't stop, and a high-speed chase ensued.

GSP says Rodriguez made a turn into a business, got out of the car, and ran away. He then carjacked another driver and sped off in that car. Rodriguez traveled onto Interstate 75 North and continued the chase. When they made it into Bibb County, the suspect crashed on US 41 near GA 247.  

Rodriguez was taken into custody by troopers and deputies from the Bibb, Houston, and Peach county sheriff’s offices.  

GSP says during the incident, there were shots fired by both Rodriguez and the trooper. No one was hurt.

This case is being handled by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) for further investigation. 

This is the 110th officer involved shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate in 2022.  The GBI has been asked to investigate 111 officer involved shootings in 2022.

State Patrol Officers are trying to arrest an armed man who wrecked his car after a chase on Tuesday. 

Reporter Caleesha Moore is at the scene at Liberty Church and Industrial Highway near Smiley's Flea Market. 

The chase reportedly started in Houston County near Perry. 

Moore reports seeing a man on the ground and a BMW wrecked against a tree. 

She says state patrol officers appeared to have the man at gunpoint. 

Officers are warning the public that the man may be armed. 

If you're driving near Smiley's you should avoid the area for now. 

The Bibb Sheriff's Office referred question to the Georgia State Patrol and so far they have not responded.
