After man killed by Peach County deputy, Macon DA and other agencies to hold a joint press conference

The District Attorney, GBI and Peach County Sheriff will hold a press conference on Monday after a deputy with the sheriff's office shot and killed a man on Tuesday.

MACON, Ga. — After a Peach County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed Caleb Hooten on Tuesday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Macon District Attorney's Office and the Peach County Sheriff's Office gathered on Thursday to review the body camera and patrol car footage from the shooting.

Now, the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office said that the agencies will convene on Monday to update the public on the shooting, according to a press release from the district attorney.

“This is a tragic situation for all involved,” District Attorney Anita Howard said. “The loss of anyone’s life hits the community very hard. I want to assure the people of Peach County and my entire Circuit that this investigation will be conducted professionally, thoroughly and transparently."

According to the GBI, it happened around 2:50 p.m. after the deputy attempted to pull over Hooten's car.

They say that Hooten did not stop and the Peach County deputy chased him. But after the "short pursuit," Hooten got out and ran into woods behind the Marvin Garden Apartments on Edwards Street.

Deputies then followed and, according to the GBI, Hooten pulled out a gun causing the deputy to shoot.

After the shooting, the Peach County Sheriff's Office requested the GBI take over the investigation as is typically for shootings involving law enforcement.

The district attorney's office highlighted how it takes time to investigate cases where a law enforcement officer shoots someone.

"We will follow the process and let the evidence and the law determine the outcome,” Howard said.

The district attorney's office emphasized that law enforcement will not take any case-specific question, citing the "integrity of an ongoing investigation." Instead, they say they'll be focusing primarily on the process of investigating a police shooting

At the press conference, the GBI agent in charge, Jerry Jones, will outline the steps for conducting an investigation where an officer shoots someone.

Then, Howard will discuss how the district attorney's office works to maintain public trust and give a clear idea of how independent investigations work.

According to the GBI's press conference, Wooten's shooting marked the 77th time the GBI has been called in to investigate an officer shooting someone this year.

The press conference will take place at the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office in Macon.
