Man charged with aggravated assault for hitting Macon homeless woman in head with brick, police say

45-year-old Te'arie Register was asleep outside the Douglas Theatre when a man hit her in the head with a brick.

MACON, Ga. — A man was arrested on Tuesday after hitting a woman in the head with a brick in Macon back in June, according to a press release from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.

On June 12 Atrium Health Navicent Police contacted 911 about a woman being assaulted.

They say 45-year-old Te'arie Register was asleep outside the Douglas Theatre when a man hit her in the head with a brick.

Investigators say surveillance footage allowed them to identify the suspect as 49-year-old Maurice Williams of Macon.

Williams was arrested on Tuesday around 10 p.m. while walking on Gray Highway. He was then taken to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center.

Williams is charged with aggravated assault and is being held without bond.

13WMAZ spoke to Register's sister Karla Nobles back in June.

"She could have been dead. I mean, what's going on on these streets now is not where I'd want anybody's family member," Nobles said. "Getting hit over the head multiple times, I'm surprised she walked out of it."

Register managed to walk away when her attacker dropped the brick. She got herself to the hospital nearly a mile away. The doctors bandaged her up but the damage still remains.

"What they've taken out of her is not fair. For her to have to sleep with the lights on. For her not being able to do what she normally does," Nobles said.

The sheriff's office advises anyone who's homeless to sleep at one of Macon's overnight shelters. If they're full, they recommend sleeping near someone you know.
