MACON, Ga. — With the start of a new school year, Bibb County is monitoring drivers' speeds in school zones.
However, residents in South Bibb are sharing concerns about excessive speeding in residential areas, including District 6 Commissioner Raymond Wilder.
On Sunday, commissioner Raymond Wilder took to social media to share his own experience on his way to church with his family.
He says a speeding car passed his truck on Bethel Church, a two-way residential road, and passed additional cars ahead of them.
Wilder says this is just one instance of speeding in the area that's experienced this issue for years.
"That's just one [example] of a lot that happens out right here in this stretch...Mount Pleasant, Bethel church, Dixon Road... they drive ridiculous out here," Wilder said.
Macon-Bibb Commissioners were allocated $30,000 for public safety efforts at the start of this year.
Wilder decided to use those funds to install speed indicator signs to track when increased speeds are most prevalent during the day.
"I'm no stranger to loving hot rod cars, I have two myself," Wilder said. "There's a time and place for it and this residential area out here is not the time and the place to running 70, 80 miles per hour and passing cars and sometimes on the double yellow line."
Wilder has also asked Sheriff David Davis to increase patrols around this area, where he's lived for 36 years.
Wilder says they are making strides with the Sheriff's Office to support staffing efforts for field patrols. Patrols are expected to increase along Bethel Church Road this week.
The Bibb County Commission approved Davis' request for a 6% pay raise for deputies this year.
