An area of downtown Macon is getting a fresh look, thanks to people in the community who helped the city win a contest that's revitalizing main streets across the nation.

People voted online for Macon to win the 'Paint What Matters' contest.

The project is hosted by Benjamin Moore.

The company is painting buildings on Second Street, between Mulberry and Poplar streets.

Main Street Macon Manager, Mechel McKinley, says the project also coincides with Mayor Robert Reichert's plan to revitalize Second Street.

McKinley says painting began 3 weeks ago.

"These were buildings that really needed to be revitalized. There were some buildings that hadn't been painted in a long time, that had broken windows and things like that. So, we were able to fix some of that," said McKinley.

Reichert added, "It's just a taste of the good things yet to come on Second Street."

Painting will be completed within the next couple of days.
