A Rutland High School student was charged with having a loaded handgun inside a car in the school parking lot.

That's according to Stephanie Hartley, spokeswoman for the Bibb County school district.

She said it happened Wednesday, April 9.

The 17-year-old boy apparently switched cars with a parent, and the car he took to school had advertisements on the outside for stun guns, pepper spray and other self-defense items.

When school officials looked inside, they saw pepper-spray canisters inside, in plain view, and decided to search the car.

That's when they found the loaded handgun in the trunk, along with several "stun guns" or Tasers.

She could not describe the type of gun, but said it was never inside the school.

Hartley would not disclose the student's name, but said he was charged with possessing a weapon on campus and taken to the Bibb County jail.

She also would not discuss discipline against the student.
