MACON, Ga. — More than 60 housing units and several businesses could be headed to Macon's Pleasant Hill neighborhood.
According to Macon-Bibb planning and zoning records, it would happen at the site of the former Macon Charter Academy on Madison Street. The troubled school lost its state charter and closed in 2018.
A developer working with the county plans to build 64 units of what they call "residential cluster units."
The plans also include the possibility of a restaurant, grocery or pharmacy. Macon-Bibb this year voted to buy the five-acre site. They plan to keep the gymnasium and auditorium there open for public use. The zoning commission is scheduled to hear the plan next month.
On April 22, also coming before the planning and zoning soon, a new event venue next to the Allman Brother's Big House. Neighbors in Macon's Vineville neighborhood fought the Allman Brother's Museum for years over plans to demolish a century-old home.
The building came down back in November. Now, the big house wants to replace it with a 21,000-foot building. It would hold receptions, recitals, reunions, school music programs and more.
Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning is scheduled to consider the plan on April 22.
