Man arrested in shooting of woman, 58, who was putting up Christmas decorations, sheriff's office says

When the sheriff's office attempted to stop a person of interest, they say the man — Jahrius Whitehead — started throwing objects out of his car.

MACON, Ga. — A man is in jail for allegedly shooting a woman Saturday who was putting up holiday decorations in their front yard, according to a press release from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.

They say Jahrius Isaiah Justus Whitehead, 32, was arrested on Monday for the shooting of Samantha Jones in the 3700 block of Log Cabin Drive. That's near the intersection with Pike Street.

It was the first of two shootings on Log Cabin Drive within 24 hours, including a fatal shooting at the Green Meadows apartments.

Family members on the scene told 13WMAZ that Jones, 58, was putting up holiday decorations when a car pulled up and shot her.

According to the sheriff's office, they say video surveillance at the time of the shooting showed a black Hyundai believed to be connected to the shooting fleeing the crime scene.

The sheriff's office's Criminal Intelligence Unit learned that the very vehicle was spotted near the Bloomfield area of Macon, the press release said.

Eventually, they say investigators attempted to pull the car over but the driver — later identified as Whitehead — would not stop.

After a brief chase, which included Whitehead throwing items out of the car, Whitehead was arrested and charged with Jones' shooting, the press release said.

They say a large amount of marijuana was collected.

The sheriff's office press release does not offer any indications of why Jones was shot.

Whitehead was taken to Bibb County Sheriff's Office Investigations Headquarters, and after additional investigation, he was taken to the Bibb County jail where he is charged with aggravated assault. Jail records show he does not have bond.

The sheriff's office says the investigation is ongoing and Whitehead could face additional charges. Anyone with information is asked to call the Bibb County Sheriff's Office at 478-751-7500 or the Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
