Man accused in 2022 shooting death outside Macon restaurant says it was self-defense

His attorneys are asking the judge to rule that the shooting was justified.

MACON, Ga. — A Macon man accused of killing a security guard two years ago goes before a judge Friday to argue that the shooting was justified.

In December 2022, Andrew Mullis was charged with allegedly murdering Dedrick Bulls.

It happened in the parking lot of the Full House Tavern in West Macon. Both men worked at the club.

According to a motion from his lawyer, Mullis believes bulls and a second guard were threatening him and he was acting in self-defense.

His attorneys point to surveillance footage from that night, which they say shows Bulls acting "aggressive" before Mullis allegedly shot him.

They say Mullis and Bulls had been in an argument the entire night.

Then, when his shift was up, Bulls and another man blocked Mullis from leaving, his attorney argued. Mullis then pulled out his phone and showed Bulls and another man something.

Then, at some point, Mullis pulled out his pistol while still showing Bulls something on his phone.

At that point, surveillance video shows Bulls "slapping the cell phone from Mr. Mullis ' hand in an aggressive manner as he approaches Mr. Mullis," the attorney wrote.

They say that's when Mullis raised his firearm and fired a singular bullet, killing Bulls.

According to previous coverage, Mullis was 19 at the time of the shooting and Bulls was 42.

His lawyers filed an immunity motion asking Judge Jeffery Monroe to rule that the shooting was justified.

Mullis also wants the judge to set bond, saying he's not a flight risk or a threat to witnesses.

He's been held without bond for the past 17 months.

That hearing before Monroe starts at 11 a.m. in Bibb County Superior Court.
