'We would much rather help you': Macon fireworks store want to help buyers have safe and bright celebration

MACON, Ga. — The 4th of July is on Thursday and people across Central Georgia are getting ready for fireworks and fun.

You can buy some at Jake's Fireworks and learn how to use them safely. 

Jennifer Steward says they are prepared to educate folks on fireworks safety.

"If you don't safely know how to light fireworks, ask us, like we would much rather help you. We'll show you how to light the cakes, how to brace the cakes, how to drop the mortars. The most important thing is to enjoy your fireworks safely," she said. 

Jake's Fireworks has locations on Gray Highway and Mercer University Drive.

They have special hours starting on Monday from 8 a.m. to midnight.

The last day to buy fireworks for your home and neighborhood is July 4.

All fireworks classified as DOT 1.4G (consumer fireworks) in Georgia are legal to purchase and use as stated in the Georgia General Assembly House Bill 727. The fireworks that you can legally buy in retail stores across Georgia include:

  • Bottle Rockets
  • Sky Rockets
  • Roman Candles
  • Firecrackers
  • Sparklers
  • Smoke and Punk
  • Fountains
  • Missiles
  • Novelties
  • Crackle and Strobe
  • Parachutes
  • Wheels and Spinners
  • Sky Flyers
  • Display Shells
  • Aerial Items (Cakes)

You must be at least 18-years-old to buy fireworks and can set them off until midnight on July 4.

It is important to stay safe while having fun. 

Physicians at the Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center recommendations for preventing firework-related injuries on the 4th of July:

  • Young children should never play with or ignite fireworks

  • Adult supervision is a must when it comes to setting off fireworks

  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions and warning labels when using fireworks.

  • Aim fireworks away from buildings, dry leaves, flammable materials and spectators; Plus, only light fireworks on smooth, flat surfaces.

  • Never try to relight fireworks that malfunction

  • Do not modify fireworks or set off homemade fireworks

  • Only light one firework at a time and then quickly run away

  • Make sure you have your phone and a bucket of water or fire extinguisher within reach; know first aid for burns.
