'I thought it was like an earthquake or something': Macon family in and out of hotels after a tree fell through their home

The fire department says severe weather over the past two weeks may have weakened the tree.

MACON, Ga. — A Macon family of five is working to figure out what comes next after a tree fell onto their home Saturday.  Now, the Dickinson family is bouncing around hotels and living out of their car.

Andrew Dickinson says the large tree fell through the family's home while they were inside.

“As soon as it happened, they started crying instantly. I mean you can hear it in them that they were scared,” Dickinson said.

The fire department says consistent storms over the last two weeks may have weakened the tree causing it to break. Dickinson says his kids were his main priority.

“As soon as I heard them, I rushed, you know, as fast as I could,” Dickinson said.

Dickinson says after reaching out to the Red Cross they said it may take up to two weeks before they can help. Mom, Kiera Brock, says they created a GoFundMe because they're all alone.

“We don't really have the resources around here for the help to be able to be placed somewhere,” Brock said.

The Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner says there are ways to prevent falling trees from damaging your home.

Before a storm always remove long branches, and make sure you're covered under an insurance plan. You never know when severe weather could strike so it's best to be prepared.

The Dickinson family is now staying in and out of hotels and hopes to receive help from the Red Cross soon.

The family is asking for any donations to their GoFundMe link.
